Since it has taken so long to get this house move sorted out, I've had plenty of time to start building lists of what gets moved, who to contact and all that sort of thing. Since I've already done the work, I thought I'd make it available as a starting point for anyone else who is going through the sheer hell of moving.
But first: special thanks to Blaine Fuller at Horne
Storage Company, Inc in North Carolina. Firstly the pages there have
some good tips for moving house, including the sort of information you
will need to provide to your moving company. Secondly Blaine was very kind
in sending me a copy of some of United Van Lines information booklets.
If you are moving to/from North Carolina (or nearby), contact Horne for
an estimate. If you are planning on moving to/from the US, contact your
local United Van Lines agent for copies of their information leaflets,
including ones on "Moving House Plants", "Moving Pets", "Moving Appliances
& Other Home Furnishings" and "Doing Your Own Packing". You can find
your local agent in the Yellow Pages or by contacting United Van Lines
directly at United Van Lines

| Time Line
What needs to be done when, before, during and after the move. Does not currently include the actual house buying (whew!) |
| Contact List and Useful Addresses to have with
you
Who do you need to tell about your house move? How do you get in touch with them? Whose phone number should you have in your pocket if an emergency occurs during the move? |
| Moving Kit
You're in the middle of moving house, now if only you'd remembered to keep a kettle handy, you could have had a cup of tea ... if you'd also remembered the tea, milk, sugar, teaspoons and cups! A list of all those useful things to have handy during the moving phase. |
| Packing Hints and Tips
So you've decided to do your own packing... Are you really, really, really sure about this? If so, here are some hints and tips about packing. |
| House Contents
A (pretty complete) list of everything that could be in my house, with indications of what I've got, what I want and what I don't need! |
| Minimum House/Apartment Contents
A very cut down list based on the above to help people moving into their first place to figure out what they need. Especially useful for students, kids leaving home, people leaving the armed forces and patients leaving long term care to set up for themselves, and for the people helping them get started. |
